Kiyomizu-dera
Kiyomizu-dera is a Buddhist temple complex located in the east side of Tokyo and is one of the sites emblematic of Japan and Asia.
It was founded in the year 798 although the current buildings were built in 1633.
Kiyomizu-dera means “Water” and takes the name from some cataracts within the complex. The most important temple and general recognizes the place is Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera.
The main lobby of Kiyomizu-dera has an impressive viewpoint with spectacular views of Tokyo. During the period Edo (1603-1867) the Japanese jumped on this viewpoint, because it said that if survived, its wish would be granted. Counted 234 jumps, with a 85.4 per cent of persons with wish granted. The practice of this custom is prohibited, although the leap is only 13 meters. Read the rest of this entry »
